The healing of the fracture as well as the cell proliferative activity of the condyle In the experimentally fractured rat condyles were evaluated by Yoshiki's method combined with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) immunohistochemistry. At fracture sites, osteoid matrix formation was observed at 1 and 2 weeks after the fracture in the ramal fragment and by the third week in the condylar fragment. The fracture gap was bridged at 4 weeks after its induction, when no osteoid was observed. Cell proliferation of the condyle was evaluated through the BrdU labeling index (LI) in the intermediate cell layer of the condyle at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 weeks after the fracture yielding a striking decrease in LIs up to 2 weeks, then a slight increase at 3 and 4 weeks after the fracture. Results showed that bone formation in the ramal fragment preceded that in the condylar fragment during the healing process of unilateral condylar fracture. Cell proliferative activity of the fractured condyle increased accompanied with bone formation in the condylar fragment.
