The studies were carried out on 297 specimens from 152 women wearing I.U.D. The specimens were obtained from endocervical scraping, endometrial aspiration and touch smears of I.U.D. after removal. Cytological examinations were made on these specimens and results were as follow.
1) Incidence of atypical cells in touch and aspiration smears were 16.5% and 40% respectively. Incidence of psammoma bodies and multinucleated histiocytes were approximately 60% in both groups.
2) Incidence of these findings in endocervical scraping smears were: atypical cells 18.3%, psammoma body 31.3%, multinucleated histiocytes 17.4%. It is remarkable that atypical cells appeared at a relatively high rate in endocervical scraping smears.
3) These findings had no relations to the length of time of wearing I.U.D.
4) Typical features of I.U.D. smears are,
a) clear background
b) psammoma bodies and multinucleated histiocytes are seen in high rate
c) Features of atypical cells of I.U.D.
i) relatively small diameter
ii) few in number
iii) overlapping and cytoplasmic vacuoles are seen frequently
iv) irregularity of nuclear rim and coarse chromatin pattern
In addition to these features, it is important to notice information at screening.
