Abstract

From ancient times, the cause of illness has been attributed to the disturbances of prohomeostatic vital energy (Qi) which is connected with natural forces in Oriental medicine. On the other hand, the word "Qi" has been frequently used in daily colloquial language. In addition, parapsychological phenomena such as telepathy, psychokinesis, the healing of illness which has been performed by Qi practitioners, have been thought to be induced by Qi. At the committee on "Qi" during the 15th Conference on the Unity of Sciences held in Washington at the end of November, 1986, I proposed that discussions on the colloquial use of Qi and its mysterious phenomena which lack sufficient scientific proof should be reserved for the time being and our efforts should be concentrated on the studies of theories and methods through which Qi working in an individual person can be activated under the interaction with natural forces and facilitate his or her healthy self-actualization. The majority of committee members agreed with my proposal.
