Sharp edges of abrasive grains on a grinding wheel produced by dressing action go bad quickly or slowly during grinding, following the nature of wear of the wheel. One must then, dress the wheel surface again to continue the right operation. The interval between two dressings is called the between-dressing tool life of a grinding wheel. In this paper, a criterion of the life is proposed. It was experimentally revealed that the performance of a grinding wheel is mainly dependent on the fractional area of flank wear of abrasive grains to the area of wheel surface. The increase of the area of flank wear produces many ineffective grains which bring about the sudden increase of grinding force, the deterioration of finish and the burning of work surfaces. This fact suggests that the fractional area of the flank wear of abrasive grains can be used for the criterion of the between-dressing life of a grinding wheel.
