In this study, we examined the association of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PgR) with the prognosis of 90 advanced gastric cancer patients and clinicopathological variables. Furthermore, we investigated whether endocrine therapy was effective for gastric cancer. ER and PgR were immunohistologically investigated in 90 advanced gastric cancer patients who underwent curative resection. The cumulative 8-year survival rate was 62.7% in the ER-negative patients and 15.7% in the ER-positive patients, the difference being significant. A significant difference between the PgR status and 8-year survival rate was also observed. The ER-positive cancers showed a higher rate of proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive cells than those of ERnegative cancers. In the scirrhous type of gastric cancer, patients with administration of tamoxifen had a better prognosis than those without tamoxifen. In conclusion, the present data suggest that ER and PgR in gastric cancer tissues are useful prognostic parameters for gastric cancer, and endocrine therapy might be an effective treatment for ER-positive cancer.
