A 54-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of a prolapsed rectum. Most of the prolapsed rectum was occupied by a tumor which had a villous or papillary surface. The tumor was reduced under spinal anesthesia on the day of admission. A barium enema examination and colono-fiberscopy confirmed the diagnosis of rectal cancer. Abdominoperineal amputation of the rectum was performed. The tumor occupied the entire circle of the rectum. Histopathological examination showed well differentiated adenocarcinoma which was located mainly in the mucosa and partially in the submucosal layer. This is a rare case of rectal carcinoma presenting as rectal prolapse.
