The innervation of the epithelial cells of the fundic mucosa was examined at the ultrastructural level in control, vagotomized, and chemically sympathectomized rats.In all three groups it was found that some,if not all of the mucosal epithelial cells rerceive direct innervation.Based on purely morphologic criteria and also on the degenerative changes induced by vagotomy or 6-HODA treatment,it was evident that this innervation was mostly cholinergic, rarely purinergic, but never adrenergic.
