抄録

This paper aims to show complicated social re1ations in social and cultural dominant class in modern Japanese society. For this purpose, I give attention to four families, that is,the Nagayos,the Matsukatas, the Arais and the Haradas, which played important roles in modernizing Japanese society. Sensai Nagayo was one of the leading bureaucrats in the Mei ji era. Masayosi Matsukata was a famous politician. Ryoichiro Arai was a pioner who flourished in silk trading between Japan and USA. And Kumao Harada played an important role in the early Showa political arena. These four families had strong ties because they were combined through marriage, academic career, economic-political activities, professional career, and cultural circles. By these ties, they composed social and cultural dominant class in modernizing Japanese society.
