This paper presents contributions to the biology of Sebastes inermis Cuvier et Valencinnes. For the age-determination can be used the scale and otolith, and the similarity of mark-size was proved. The relationships of total length (L) to scale-size (R) and also to otolith-size (R) were linear, and mark-sizes were standardized by L-R equations. The marks are formed periodically on the scale in September, while on the otolith in April. The growth was fitted by the Putter-Bertalanff's equation to length data, Buch-Andresen-Fischer's equation to weight data. This ovoviviparou s fish copulates in November, and the egg-fertilization and progeny-production occur from December to January. The fish produces the progenies at one time. The sexual maturation is first attained at 2-age and the main spawning group is the 3 age group. The number of progenies is proportional to 5.56 power of female total length.

メバルは,魚類の全漁獲高から見るとさして重要な魚種とは言えないが,その分布が広く,沿岸の漁業者にとつては重要な漁獲対象の一つである.九州において沿岸付近に棲息する魚類の資源生物学的研究を行なうに当つて,先づ本種の年令,成長及び成熟について調査研究を行なつた.用いた資料は,1955年7月より1958年4月に亘り採集された644尾で,採集地は福岡市近郊の津屋崎(九州大学農学部水産実験所所在地)であり,ほとんど津屋崎魚市場において購入し,一部は水産実験所の試験船を用いて採集した.捕獲に用いられた漁具は主に三重網(底刺網,津屋崎近辺では角目網と称する)で,一本釣によつて捕獲されたものが僅かに混つている.年令査定には,鱗及び耳石を用いた.本研究を行なうに当り始終懇切な御指導及び御校閲を頂いた相川教授並びに塚原助教授に厚く御礼申し上げる.
