Abstract

Field experiment was carried out to develop a simpler analysis method for characterizing 3-dimensional distribution of root system on tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum G.). Soil core with top and bottom area of 40cm×40cm and 50cm in depth was sampled. Fractal dimension of root system contained in each soil layer of 2cm-depth was calculated to estimate the change of root system with soil depth. On the other hand, fractal dimension of root system was also calculated for each soil part of 2cm-thickness taken from a vertical soil layer containing a stem base. Significant correlation was found between fractal dimensions obtained from these to ways of calculation. Thus, 3-dimensional distribution of root system can be estimated by the change of fractal dimension calculated only for a thin vertical soil layer containing a stem base.
