Abstract

Intra and inter-specific differences for the distribution of antioxidant activity (AOA) in each seed obtained from two buckwheat species were detected by micro chemiluminesence from the sample with the H_2O_2-acetaldehyde mixed solution. In common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench), AOA of hull was higher than that of flour part, but in Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum Gaertn.), AOA of embryo was higher than other parts. There was a significant difference of seed- AOA characteristics between two buckwheat species (P<0.01), and were also varietal differences among these varieties of common (P<0.05) and Tartary buckwheats (P<0.01). These results indicated that the active sites for antioxidant function and the level of activity differed between common and Tartary buckwheat. The chemical compounds related to the activity seemed to differ between two species.
