There has been a growing interest in the study of the sexual functioning of the disabled. However, the subject has been ignored not only by the general public, but also medical rehabilitation professionals. The major reason for this is a lack of knowledge about the subject and negative attitudes concerning sexuality.
The extent of this knowledge and the attitudes of professionals about the sexuality of the disabled has not been documented in Japan. This led to the creation of a specific questionnaire for just that purpose. In 1987, 378 people involved in adult rehabilitation services were asked to complete this questionnaire.
Questions focused on concern for the sexuality of the disabled in rehabilitative care. An analysis of the answers taken from the questionnaires indicated only a small percentage of all these people-which included nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and physicians-actually engaged in the sexual education of their disabled patients.
Answers were divided into several groups, by categories such as age, sex, marital status and profession, and a comparative analysis of these groups was made. The results showed that knowledge and attitudes about sexuality differed by age, profession, marital status and sex. In general, younger and single persons were more knowledgeable than others completing the questionnaire, and had more positive attitudes toward sexual education for the disabled.
Analysis according to profession revealed that PTs & OTs were more knowledgeable and had more positive attitudes toward the sexuality of the disabled than did nurses and careworker staff. Physicians were the most knowledgeable, but were equal to nurses in terms of attitudes toward the sexuality of the disabled. The positive attitudes of women toward the sexuality of the disabled showed significant correlation with the accuracy of their knowledge.
Sexual adjustment and education are believed to be a fundamental aspect of the medical and psychosocial rehabilitaion of the disabled. Such services-the evaluation of sexual dysfunction, and sexual education-should not be considered as separate treatments, nor should they be less regarded because of private taboo. Rather, they should be included in patient's regular program. The principal members of a rehabilitation team should be given more opportunities to learn about the sexuality of the disabled and to take responsibility for their sexual education. An appropriate curriculum concerning the sexuality of the disabled should be integrated into the basic education of nurses and others going into the rehabilitation field.
