This paper considers the selection among population and housing items concerning the population censuses of Japan for and after the year 2000. All Items included, or to be included, in the general schedules of the population censuses of Japan (1920-1995), of the population (and housing) censuses of the U.S. (1790-1990), and of housing surveys of Japan (1948-1993) are shown and compared. The population and housing items are classified under several groups of significant topics. Technical and administrative aspects concerning the introduction of sampling techniques into the population census of Japan and its merger with the housing survey are discussed in consideration of the possibility of dividing the items into (1) items for complete enumeration, and (2) items for sample enumeration.
