Crystalline Electric Field and Magnetic Properties of the TmCu_2Si_2 Intermetallics

Abstract

The taaagnetic properties of TnaCu3Si3 are studied by tmagnetometric rneastrrernent, inelasticneutron scattering ([NS) experitnent, elastic constant meastrrement vtsing ultrasonic velocityand neutron diffraction experiment on the powdered and single crystalline samples, Crystallineelectric field (CEF) parameters which are deternained by the naagnetic susceptibility and the INSspectrum give 4f CBF levels consisting of a singlet U!" ground state, a singlet T'S" first excitedstate at 6.1 K, a doublet F"' second excited state at 79.5 K, and so on. Temperattrre variationof the 4f CEF level population, especially that of doublet II", explains well anomalous behaviorof the magnetic susceptibility along the a-axis exhibiting the minirnum arotrnd 15 K and theunaxinutrm around 45 K, Weak lattice softening below 120 K is also attributable mainly to strainsusceptibility of [1", An exchange-indtrced Van Vleck antiferrornagnetic transition occurs at 2.8K, since magnittmde of transition probability between the grotrnd T'S" and excited IS" singlets isso large to induce the magnetic transition. It is confirmed that the antiferromagnetic strtrctureis a sinusoidally rnoment-naodulated one described by a propagation vector of q = (),J,0) with6 :: 0.147, where the Tm rtuonaents align along the c-axis,
