EXAFS-PEPICO Synchronous Measurements for the Size-Selective Structure Analysis of Neutral Free Clusters.

In order to realize a new idea for the size-selective structural analysis of neutral free clusters [Yao et al.: J. Synchrotron Radiat. 8 (2001) 542], we have developed an experimental method in which the photoelectron photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectra are measured synchronously with the extended X-ray fine structure (EXAFS). In this method we can measure not only the total ion yield (TIY) but also the partial ion yield (PIY) of each daughter ion which stems from the fragmentation of neutral clusters induced by the X-ray absorption. We have applied this method to selenium cluster beam and found that both the TIY and PIY spectra show clear EXAFS oscillations, from which structural information on Se₂ and larger species such as Se₅ have been deduced.
