Abstract
It is shown theoretically that non-propagating solitons can be excited on an interface between two inviscid, incompressible, immiscible fluids in a channel in a gravitational field. Interfacial waves of small amplitudes which have nodes in the transverse direction and weak spatial dependence in the longitudinal direction turn out to be described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an extra term, which has a functional coefficient, arising from the mass conservation. Excitation of solitons by a vertical or a horizontal oscillation of the channel is also studied.
