In the previous paper production of crystalline Mg(OH)2 by mutual diffusion of Mg2+ and OH- ions into distilled water was described.
This paper the results of the formation of Mg(OH)2 crystals by diffusion of Mg2+ into an alkaline mother liquor is reported.
Source of Mg2+: nitrate, sulfate, chloride.
Alkali: of sodium, calcium.
Concentrations:
Mg2+: N/105-N/10
NaOH: N/105-N/10
Ca(OH)2: N/100-N/40
Temperature: 34.5-79.5°C
Addition rates: 0.8-3.0cc/hr
Mg2+ diffused into the alkaline mother liquor via a ceramic membrane, which had an average diameter of 0.5μ.
The principal results can be summerized as:
1) No large differences were observed between the various Mg salts used.
2) Optimal OH- concentrations were: NaOH: N/100-N/50. Ca(OH)2: N/100.
Optimal Mg2+: N/50-N/30 yielded the best shape and size of M(OH)2 crystals.
3) Temperature above 50°C, both the shape and size of the produced Mg(OH)2 crystals improve greatly.
4) Mg2+ addition rate: V/1400-V/700cc/hr. (V=volume of mother liquor) optimal.
Higher addition rates resulted in extremely tiny crystallites of Mg(OH)2, which show almost no growth with time.
5) Optimal reaction time durations: 7-14 days.
Shorter times resulted in small crystals, longer times did not increase the size.
6) Final pH 10.5-11.8 resulted in the large crystals.
7) Under the best combination of the above optimal conditions single crystals of Mg(OH)2 100-1500μ in largest dimension were produced.
Yields of large crystals: 40-85%.
