This is a study based on analysis of microfilm data compiled by University Microfilms International (UMI) concerning doctoral dissertations on Japan-related subjects, accepted by universities in the U.S.A. and Canada between 2000 and 2002. During this three-year period, a total of 463 doctorates were awarded by 142 universities, with degrees in the fields of education and history most numerous. In terms of historical era, those dealing with Japan of the modern era, nineteenth century and later, were most numerous, while the proportion of those dealing with the literature and arts of earlier periods appears to be declining. It seems fair to say that research at this level no longer deals with Japan at the level of orientalism or Japonisme; almost all of the dissertations reviewed consist of analysis and study in specialist fields. This may be a reflection in the field of Japanology of the American social trend to evaluate positively research that contributes to the interests of the state. Universities awarding the largest number of doctorates in Japan-related fields are concentrated in Hawaii and California, states that continue to have comparatively larger Japanese-American populations. A notable increase is also to be seen at Ohio State University, which during the 1980s expanded its collection of Japan-related books and journals. This demonstrates the positive effect that improvements in the research environment can have in terms of attracting researchers.
