Abstract
type:論文(Article)
This paper aims at conducting a lexicographical survey of the description of affixes and combining forms in English. First we propose the two-fold strategic aspects for the morphological study of word formation, analytical/compositional and synthetic/Gestaltic. Words produced in the compositional process of word formation are characterized by combining a lexical stem/root and affixes/ combining forms. Contrastively, the process of synthetic word formation produces a word from a phrase/sentence by lexical indiomatization. Second, we claim that English has three basic elements for word formation, LF(lexical form), CF(combining form) and AF(affixal form), although they are sometimes difficult to make a clear-cut distinction from each other. Then we propose a matrixal model of possible combinations of word elements of LF, CF and AF. This model integrates the nine possible combinations of word elements. Third, we will make a detailed survey for the lexicographical description of affixes and combining forms. We look up 10 authentic British and American dictionaries, checking how 139 English prefixal word elements are listed and described in each dictionary, in other words, we inquire into whether they are listed as affix or combining form. As a result, we acknowledge that the number we obtained from this research is suggestive to determine whether a given word element is affix combining form.
