We propose a new method for the recognition of machining form features using a polyhedral solid model of a machined part. The concept of the feature loop is introduced and used to find form features in the part. The conditions based on the feature loop are shown and used to recognize simple features such as a hole, pocket, or through slot from a convex polyhedron generated from faces connected to the feature loop. If a simple feature is not recognized from a feature loop, a compound feature is considered to be surrounded by the loop. Three types of compound features are defined here. A decomposition method is applied to the compound feature according to its type in order to decompose it into a set of simple features. The volumetric form of each feature is obtained asa subvolume partitioned from a total removal volume of the machined part. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm is clarified through a case study.
