Experiments have been carried out to elucidate the irregular behavior of flame propagation near the lean limit mixtures in a closed bomb by using microgravity environment achieved in a freely falling chamber. The irregular flame propagation is observed by taking the schlieren streak photographs of the laminar flame propagation under microgravity for propane-air mixtures. The initial condition of mixtures is at room temperature and at 0.101MPa in pressure. The experimental results show that (1) microgravity is the most suitable method to investigate the burning characteristics of lean limit mixtures, (2) the irregular flame propagation occurs when Lewis number(mass diffusivity/thermal diffusivity) is less than unity for propane-air mixture, and (3) hydrogen added in the lean limit mixtures and improvement of the reflectivity of the internal surface wall of the combustion bomb are shown to be effective in enhancing the flame propagation speed.
