We held recombinant DNA course for junior and senior high school teachers four times from 2002 through 2003, after the MEXT issued new guidelines regarding recombinant DNA experiments for educational purposes. We used the Biotechnology Explorer kit (Bio-Rad), with which the participants would be able to conduct recombinant DNA experiments in their own schools. We assigned a written test to the participants before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the course, and analyzed their understanding of the lectures and experiments. We also gathered information by questionnaires from the participants, analyzed it, and came to the following conclusions. 1) Participants are dissatisfied with current biology textbooks. 2) Participants claim that the restrictions of the contents of science textbooks by the MEXT are unreasonable and that teachers should be allowed to teach according to their individual circumstances. 3) Participants claim that every high school student should learn DNA science and biotechnology as a part of science literacy. 4) DNA education in high schools is not easy to perform in the current situation because colleagues in schools and parents do not understand well the safety and importance of recombinant DNA technologies. We then discuss the present realization and future perspective of DNA education for high school biology.
