Abstract

This paper introduces a process for producing fine-grained doubly-oriented silicon steel sheets by oxide-separator-induced decarburization, and describes the magnetic properties of the material. The process consists of conventional double-stage cold rolling and decarburizing stack annealing with SiO_2-containing reactive separators for steels with an approximate chemistry of 3%Si-1%Mn-0.05%C. An almost complete decarburization is caused by a thermochemical reaction between stacked steel sheets and the separators under reduced pressure at elevated temperatures: 2C + SiO_2 → Si + 2CO. During this process, marked development of the cube texture, {100}<001>, takes place. Although the final grain size is as small as 0.4 mm in diameter, the coverage by cube-oriented grains is more than 90%. The material shows high permeability, low core loss, and small magnetostriction.
