Abstract

The area surrounding a zinc refinery at Annaka, Gunma is obviously contaminated by cadmium, zinc and lead soot ejected by the refinery. In order to find out the history of the contamination, the author compared the annual rings of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) growing in the contaminated area with those growing in areas far from the refinery. The width of the annual ring of the samples from trees growing near the refinery became obviously narrower since 1955. Contents of Cd, Zn and Pb in wood from the contaminated area were higher than those from the “clean” area. In particular, the amount of Cd showed a tendency to increase since 1950, and attained its highest level from 1954 to 1958, and then began to decrease gradually. Amount of Cd in the annual rings of Konara (Quercus serrata) near the refinery showed the same tendency. Hence the author concludes that by investigating the annual rings of Sugi trees it is possible to roughly trace the history of the past pollution and the history of the past contamination.
