Complexation reactions of antimony(III) and antimony(V) with 3-hydroxy-7-methoxyflavone have been studied fluorometrically. The concentration of sulfuric acid giving the complex with maximum fluorescence intensity was 34 M for antimony(III) and around 0.01 M for antimony(V). The time necessary to complete the reaction at the respective concentrations of sulfuric acid was within the dead time of mixing of reaction solutions (about four seconds) for antimony(III) and about thirty minutes for antimony(V). Based on these differences in fluorescence characteristics of the complexes and reactivities of the metal ions, antimony(III) up to 1×10-6 M was selectively determined in 3 M sulfuric acid by the linear extrapolation method with a detection limit of 7× 10-9 M and antimony(V) up to 1×10-6 M was selectively determined in 0.03 M sulfuric acid by the fixed time method with a detection limit of 2×10-8 M. Simultaneous determination of antimony(III) and antimony(V) was also possible for samples containing 1×10-6 M total antimony in 1 M sulfuric acid.
