1-Phenyl-3-methyl-4-stearoyl-5-pyrazolone (C18) loaded on a porous polymer resin (C18/PPR) was prepared by our laboratory, and used for the preconcentration of Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II). Copper was quantitatively retained on C18 /PPR from an aqueous solution of pH 2.5, while Ni and Co were retained at nearly 97% at pH>5. The adsorption capacities of C18/PPR adsorbent were ca. 40 μmol g -1 for Cu, and ca. 30 μmol g -1 for Ni and Co. In the column experiment Cu, Ni and Co were quantitatively retained with 1.5 g C18/PPR at a flow rate of 5 cm3 min -1 and pH 7.5. These metals retained on C 18/PPR were completely eluted with 2 mol dm -3 hydrochloric acid at a flow rate of 3 cm3 min -1. The adsorption-elution cycle could be repeated twenty times without any observable decline in the efficiency of C18/PPR. Since there were no observable effects due to changes in the volume of the sample solution up to a volume of 5 dm3 containing 200μg of each metal, a concentration factor of 200 could be achieved. The C18/PPR was applied to a recovery experiment of these metals with sodium chloride reagent (special grade and first class) and solar salt. The recoveries of each metal for these samples tested were 88100%. The relative standard deviations (n=5) for each value obtained were less than 4.5%.
