Solvent extraction of lanthanoids(III) from sodium thiocyanate solutions into chloro form containing trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) or tributylphosphate (TBP) has been examined. The extraction curves are explained by assuming Ln(SCN)3.3TOPO, Ln(SCN)3.3TBP, and NaLn(SCN)4.4TBP as the dominant extracted species. The ex traction constants for all lanthanoids(III) except cerium(III) and promethium(III) were determined. The extraction constants for the 3rd complex with TBP and TOPO in crease monotonically with the atomic number, while the constants for the 4th complex are very similar among the middle lanthanoids. The difference in the pattern of the plot of the distribution ratio against atomic number between the extractions with TBP and with TOPO is explained in terms of the different extracted species.
