The optimum conditions for the analysis of As and Se in biological samples by microwave-induced plasma mass spectrometry (MIP-MS) have been investigated. The sensitivity of these analyte elements was highest when the microwave power was 1.3 kW and the carrier gas flow rate, 1.1 l/min. The spectroscopic interference of co-existing elements (Na, K, Ca, S, P) with As (m/z = 75) and Se (m/z =80) was also investigated.Sodium, K and P did not show any spectroscopic interference. However, Ca interfered to As (m/z = 75) in the form of the molecular ion 40Ca35Cl (m/z =75). It was found that 500 mg/l of CaCl2 gives ion counts equivalent to those from 0.81.6 μg/l of As. The proposed method was applied to the determination of As and Se in 6 biological reference samples. The analytical results were in good agreement with the certified or reference values. The detection limits (3σ) were 0.02 μg/l for As and 0.06 μg/l for Se.
