Abstract

A continuous extraction method was applied to separating Co(II) and Ni(II). 8-quinolinol (Ox) was used as extraction reagent because it is a well-known chelate reagent. In the present measurement, the Ox concentration in the extraction solvent was 1.0 × 10<SUP>-4</SUP> mol/l and the pH of the aqueous phase containing the metals was 6.0, which was adjusted with an acetate buffer solution. When the Ox reagent concentration was lower than 5.0×10<SUP>-4</SUP> mol/l, Co(II) and Ni(II) formed CoR<SUB>2</SUB>·2H<SUB>2</SUB>O and NiR<SUB>2</SUB>·HR in the aqueous phase, respectively. Since NiR<SUB>2</SUB>·HR can be extracted more easily than CoR<SUB>2</SUB>·2H<SUB>2</SUB>O, the only NiR<SUB>2</SUB>·HR is extracted using the above - mentioned conditions with present continuous extraction method. As a result of extraction, Ni(II) was carried into the distillation flask and separated from Co(II) in a single operation.
