Selenium(IV) was determined by hydride generation-AAS after extracting the complex (4, 5-benzopiazselenol) of selenium(IV)-DAN (2, 3-diaminonaphthalene) from 500 ml of water into 50 ml of cyclohexane, decomposing the organic phase by nitric-perchloric acids, and then reducing all of the selenium to selenium(IV) with hydrochloric acid. For the determination of both selenium(IV) and selenium(VI) the sample solution was treated by boiling for 90 min to reduce the selenium(VI) to selenium(IV) after 25 ml of hydrochloric acid and 8 g of potassium bromide were added to the water sample. The amounts of selenium(VI) could be calculated by subtracting the amounts of selenium (IV) from the total of selenium(IV) and selenium(VI). This method was applied to tap water and 28 brands of commercially available mineral water ; the results included analytical data for 11 ppt and below for selenium(IV) and 1296 ppt for selenium(VI), except for the highest selenium(VI) value of 494 ppt.
