Abstract

Bare land is widely distributed over the northern part of Naoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture. Afforestation is difficult in this area because of dry soil conditions. To determine which parts of the region might be afforested the distribution of soil water content over the region was estimated using Terra/ASTER satellite data. Data from Band 3(NIR, 0.78-0.86 μm)and Band 4(SWIR, 1.600-1.700 μm)was used, after demonstrating that these bands are closely related to surface soil moisture. It was found from field work in forested areas that areas with water content more than 3.5% and slopes less than 30 degrees could be easily afforested. The satellite data was used to identify the areas with the required water contents for planting. The method appears to be a very useful and efficient tool in planning afforestation.
