The Sumatra earthquake whose magnitude is 9.0 occurred in December 26, 2004. The generated tsunami extended to the whole area of the Indian Ocean, and a catastrophic disaster occurred in coastal area. Tsunami field survey was carried out around Phuket, Thailand and around Galle, Sri Lanka immediately after the disaster. It is very important in the consideration of countermeasures in the future to investigate the raid situation of the tsunami, and to clarify the cause of becoming the major catastrophe. The traces and signs of height of tsunami inundation were measured in the field, and the damage situation was investigated. In the damage situation of the buildings, the houses made of concrete were little damaged, on the other hand the houses of the brick making had collapsed at a considerable probability. It was remarkable that the foundation of the ground was scoured by tsunami, and the road bridge and the railway track at the mouth of a river were damaged. The coastline is resources for tourism, and the tsunami countermeasures with the structure are difficult for the suffered countries like Thailand and Sri Lanka. Therefore, it is thought that the installation of the escape facility that doesn't spoil the view is effective as countermeasures in the future with the educational campaign to the resident about the tsunami.
