Mucocele is commonly occurring lesion of the oral mucous membrane and the most common lesion involving minor salivary gland. The lesion is the result of trauma with injury or severance of an excretory duct and the subsequent escape of mucous into the adjacent tissue. A total of 207 cases recorded as mucocele of the oral cavity in the Second Department of Oral Surgery, Kyushu Dental College Hospital, during the period from March 1975 to September 1981, were clinically and histopathologically analysed. The following results were obtained : 1) A series of 207 cases of mucocele has been reported. 2) Of the 207 cases, 170 cases (82.1 per cent) were under 39 years of age. 3) The sex incidence was 71 males (34.3 per cent) and 136 females (65.7 per cent). 4) The lesion in the majority of 100 cases was located on the lower lip (67.6 per cent) but occurred with lesser frequency on the floor of the mouth (16.2 per cent), the buccal mucosa (9.5 per cent), the gingiva (4.7 per cent), the upper lip (1.4 per cent) and the palate (0.7 per cent). 5) Of the 207 cases, 66 cases were found to be histopathologically of the three types (Matsuoka's classification); the type I was in 53 per cent, the type II was in 42.4 per cent, the type III was in 4.6 per cent. 6) Treatment was mostly surgical removal with recurrence of the lesion in only 4 cases (2.6 per cent).
