A 73-year-old woman had been admitted to Hyogo College of Medicine Hospital for further examination of chest X-ray abnormalities on April, 1983. She had been diagnosed as having small cell lung cancer in the left lower lobe and was treated with intensive chemotherapy followed by adjuvant radiotherapy. Her outpatient course was almost uneventful thereafter but she stopped receiving regular check-ups after 4 years. About 7 years after the initial admission, she was readmitted to our hospital because of productive cough and loss of appetite. The chest X-ray film on the second admission showed a nodular shadow in the left middle lung field and percutaneous aspiration cytology revealed recurrent small cell lung cancer. Intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy were performed and she again achieved nearly complete remission. Recurrence of small cell lung cancer after such a long interval as in this case is very rare.
