Abstract
Growth factors, which are originally identified as cell growth and cell survival stimulants have been recently recognized as multi-functional bio-active substances. In order to measure the growth factor concentration in the blood or cerebrospinal fluid, a highly sensitive, but non-automatic bio-assay system using ball-formation responses of Hydra tentacles has been used. In the present study, we developed an image processing system which automatically detects ball-formation responses. It has been demonstrated that the system, which includes indices of ball formation such as the length of tentacles and the fractal dimension of Hydra successfully detects ball-formation responses in the rate of 94.3%.
