Abstract

The two sets of dipole antennas, WANT(wire antenna)and PANT(probe antenna), onboard GEOTAIL spacecraft are used to measure electric fields of plasma waves observed around the Earth's magnetosphere. To obtain accurate values of electric fields we need to know exact effective lengths of these antennas, which have conventionally assumed simply as half(50m)of their tip-to-tip length(100m). In the present report the effective lengths of these antennas are evaluated by calculating refractive indices of chorus emissions. Comparison between the refractive indices calculated as the ratio of wave magnetic fields to wave electric fields(estimated with the assumed effective lengths of 50m)and those calculated theoretically by a cold plasma approximation, shows that the actual effective lengths are 68.5m, a little longer than half of their tip-to-tip lengths.
