The in-tunnel HSP method, developed by the Public Works Research Institute, Ministry of Construction, together with 11 civilian companies, shows the superior attributes of reporting results swiftly and economically among some of its important features. For this reason it is the favorable exploration method when the rapid excavation by TBM use and the like is required. In this paper we describe the relationship between the explored outcome and TBM excavation characteristics executed on the Tsukui Water-way Tunnel Construction Project.<BR>The Tsukui Water-way Tunnel which is situated at the northern part in Kanagawa Prefecture adopted the doubleshielded type TBM (5.4 m in excavation diameter) in the range of 4, 836 m length within about 5, 200 m in total. The geology distributing in the tunnel consists of several types of pyroclastic materials and clastic deposits belonging to the Aikawa Group in the Neogene-Miocene period, whose rock quality are generally excellent.<BR>Though the HSP has been explored 13 times in all basically before excavating designed D pattern areas, the result examined here is the first application, where the shear zone and some continuous bedding plane faults are recognized. There are eight groups of reflected waves in the HSP profile acquired, showing the most remarkable reflection events at the shear zone position. Concerning the TBM performance in driving, meanwhile, it becomes clear that the total excavation energy is closely related to cutting resistance of rock mass, by considering the relation of its net penetration rate, thrust, torque and consumed electricity to the associated rock mass classification.<BR>Since the concept of cutting resistance reflects synthetically complicated geological factors, namely slight variations of lithology, discontinuity properties like its orientation, frequency and so on, it has proved to agree well with the HSP findings together with other machine factors.
