Nest structure and colony composition is described and colonial productivity is estimated for Dolichovespula media media and D. saxonica nipponica based on mature and dissolved colonies collected in Hokkaido, northern Japan. The nests, whose structure was quite similar between the species, possessed only one worker comb and one to several reproductive combs, and had a mean of 913 cells (range : 289-1, 987) in m. media and 1, 109 in s. nipponica (443-1, 843), and were estimated to have produced a total of 700-800 adults in both the species. Reproductive combs of dissolved nests produced an average of 209 queens and 206 males in m. media and 79 queens and 216 males in s. nipponica, and the estimate of reproductive to worker ratio was 1.3-1.9 in both the species. Seasonal change in the number of flights of workers was observed in a m. media colony, in which new queens were frequently observed to orientate themselves with and return to the nest in late August.
