抄録
A single beam direct-overwrite optical disk drive using a rewritable phase change medium has been developed for digital data storage. The direct-overwrite function was achieved by the same simple optical haed as that of a write-once drive. An 86 mm pregrooved disk has a large capacity of 280MB on both sides. A data transfer rate of 6 Mbps was accomplished. A split type optical head having a 9 gram moving portion attained a 42 ms seek time.<BR>The overwriting temperature of the active layer is much higher than the operating temperature. This optical disk drive can execute reliable write /read operations, tolerating a wide variance in operating temperature.<BR>Rewritable media were evaluated under practical operating conditions and could be overwritten more than several 100, 000 cycles on the same physical sectors. Implementing an advanced defect manegement, the effective (logical) cyclability of the optical disk drive was improved over one million cycles.
