Abstract

To investigate visual fatigue induced by watching stereoscopic TV, we studied the changes in visual function, especially the fusion range and AC/A ratio, after 12 subjects watched stereoscopic high-definition TV for one hour. 6 subjects could perceive a stereogram by free fusion, while the other 6 subjects could not. The key results were as follows :
(1) No significant change in the AC/A ratio was produced by watching either two-dimensional or stereoscopic HDTV for one hour.
(2) Subjects who could perceive a stereogram by free fusion had a wider fusion range than those who could not.
(3) After watching two-dimensional HDTV, the mean fusion range of the 12 subjects showed no significant change, while after watching stereoscopic HDTV, it showed a significant decrease and recovered after rest. This suggests that the decrease in the fusion range can provide an index of visual fatigue.
(4) The interaction between the ability to perform free fusion and the decrease in the fusion range was apparent but fell short of being significant. This suggests that visual fatigue in watching stereoscopic TV differs between subjects who can perceive a stereogram by free fusion and subjects who cannot.
