In view of the ever rising cost of inorganic fertilizers, the possibility of improving soil ferility with sewage sludge was investigated in Ibadan, Nigeria. The dry sewage sludge was obtained from the University of Ibadan sewage treatment plant and tested on a soil that had been continuously cultivated for over ten years without fertilizer application. Six rates of the sludge (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 t/ha) and a control (no sludge application) were used for the trial, while maize (Zea mays L.) was the test crop. Soil analysis before and after sludge application was carried out to determine the magnitude of the changes in soil fertility. Sludge application increased the level of soil organic matter by 66%, the contents of total N and available P by 27%, the content of exchangeable Ca by 40% and that of exchangeable K by 31%. Soil pH declined slightly by 6%. Maize height, stem girth and grain yield were significantly increased by sludge application. Sludge application beyond the rate of 15 t/ha did not exert significant changes in either the level of soil nutrients or maize yield.
