Abstract

Indoor thermal environments in folk dwellings in Miyagi prefecture were investigated during winter and summer. In winter, living rooms were only heated in all houses, and temperature of these rooms was around 20C during heating time, but in other rooms it was as cold as in outdoor. In summer, indoor temperatures were nearly equal to outdoor temperature during daytime, but were 5-7C higher than outdoor temperature at night time with closed windows. It is possible that the passive system of each vernacular house, had some good impact on the indoor thermal environment during summer.
