Abstract
A scenario to start up DT fusionplant equipped with a completed fuel circulation system and breeding blanket without loading initial tritium is considered. With external power input by a neutral beam, d-d reaction produces small amount of tritium and neutron that is converted to tritium in the breeding blanket. Recirculated tritium burns in d-t reaction and yields more tritium, resulting exponential breeding. A preliminary analysis under assumptions of a model fusion power plant indicates that it is possible to come to a full power operation with 50% tritium in plasma requires approximately orders of 100 days. To prepare initial tritium for fusion plant is therefore not mandatory and is a matter of price compared with a cost of initial plant operation with external power. Also it implicates limitations of capability of fusion energy from security aspect is less than previously considered.
