Abstract

Though fusion generated alpha particles play an important role in plasma heating and alpha-driven instabilities, an effective measurement method has not been established yet. At present, Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) diagnostics for alpha particle measurements are being developed using either a carbon dioxide laser or a gyrotron as a high power light source. In JT-60U, the former approach is being pursued to verify proof-of-principle of this alpha particle diagnostic by establishing a measurement technique for ion temperature and high energy particles. Features of the diagnostic system installed on JT-60U are explained.
