Abstract

In designing an ITER-like device, it is necessary to estimate the confinement properties of a large size plasma by extrapolating past and present experimental results as guided by scaling laws, transport models and plasma confinement theories. Since the first principle transport theory is still under development, empirical and phenomenological approaches are inevitable. From this point of view, several crucial subjects for the ITER physics are summarized based on "ITER Physics Basis" published in Nuclear Fusion [1]. The present paper follows ref. [1]. Confinement databases, H-mode scaling, power threshold scaling, transport modeling, dimensionally identical experiments, L-H transition physics, the edge pedestal, ELM, high-density H-mode and the internal transport barrier are described. Their relations with ITER are shown.
