Abstract

In order to achieve a high confinement core plasma with a cold and dense divertor plasma, the JT-60U has a plan to modify the present open divertor to a new semi-closed divertor with a dome (W-shaped Divertor). Neutral particle and impurity behavior in this divertor modification was analyzed with a two-dimensional neutral transport code (NEUT2D) and a two-dimensional impurity transport code (IMPMC). The neutral flux into the main plasma can be reduced to a half of that in the open divertor. The density control by means of divertor pumping is found to be possible. The methane sputtered from the private region of the open divertor has a possibility to cause a MARFE. In contrast, the dome to close the private region suppresses effectively the carbon impurity flux into the upstream of SOL and the temperature dependence of its radiation becomes favorable to thermal stability.
