Abstract

The records continuum is a new paradigm of records management and archives administration whose cradle is Australia. Explosively increasing electronic records, the enactment of freedom of information and privacy legislations, and postmodern theories have made it come on the stage of discussion in depth among records managers and archivists all over the world. In Japan, however, introduction and consideration of the paradigm are fairly under way. This article first deciphers the records continuum diagram drawn by Frank Upward and considers an attempt to put the paradigm into more practical context made by Sue McKemmish. It, then, introduces Terry Cook's view on the records continuum as an example of reactions from countries other than Australia. It also explores what the paradigm inspires in us as records and archives professionals.
