Abstract

Measures for national land development and management in Japan were converted from the concept of priority against regional function and convenience to the "sustainable development" in harmony with environment. Among growing concept that natural science and technology should contributes to not only human beings but also all inhabit on the earth, mission of geotechnical engineering becomes wider to achieve national land, region and/or river basin management as overlooking engineering merged wide range science and technology. This paper describes prospect in future role of geotechnical and environmental engineering, and contribution to education including lifelong education in this field.
