Six species of rodents were investigated for susceptibility to Babesia rodhaini by means of intraperitoneal inoculation of parasitized erythrocytes (PE). As a result, these species of rodents could be divided into four groups according to their susceptibility to B. rodhaini. The characteristics of each group were as follows: 1. All the mice inoculated with 104 PE per head showed parasitemia and hemoglobinuria, and died on the 9th-12th day after inoculation (group 1). 2. All the golden hamsters, jirds and rats inoculated with 109 PE per head showed parasitemia and hemoglobinuria, and the majority of these animals died on the 5th-7th day after inoculation (group 2). 3. Japanese field voles inoculated with 109 PE per head showed only parasitemia (group 3). 4. No guinea pigs showed any susceptibility to B. rodhaini when inoculated with 108-109 PE per head (group 4).
