We examined the relationship between soil moisture and emergence depth of seeds of seven weed species. 1) The higher the soil moisture was, the greater the germination of three kinds of barnyardgrass was checked, and the shallower the emergence depth was. In the submerged condition, Echinochloa oryzicola could emerge from depth of 2cm, E. crus-galli var. crus-galli from depth of lcm, but E. crus-galli var. praticola could hardly emerge. In the suitable soil moisture condition, each of them could emerge from depth of 8cm. 2) Monochoria vaginalis could emerge from very shallow depth in the submerged condition, but it could hardly emerge in the saturated soil moisture condition. 3) Scirpus juncoides subsp. juncoides could emerge from depth 3cm in the submerged condition, but it could hardly emerge in the saturated soil moisture condition. 4) Aneilema keisak and Polygonum lapathifolium could emerge from depth of about 6 cm in the suitable soil moisture condition.
